Italo Bonetti – A Life of Courage, Family, and Italian Tradition

Italo Bonetti’s journey from Valtellina to Vancouver is a powerful Italian immigrant story rooted in courage, family, and tradition. He arrived in Canada in 1954, leaving behind his small hometown in Valtellina, Northern Italy. Back home, he worked in a factory—steady, honest work, like so many Italian tradesmen of his generation.

When he heard that several people from his town had gone to work in Vancouver, he decided to follow. With courage and hope, he prepared his papers  and he began his journey—by ship from Rome to Halifax, and then five long days by train across the country to Vancouver. It was a journey that would change his life forever.

In Vancouver, Italo found work as a laborer. He was hardworking, determined, and grateful for every opportunity. A few years later, in 1960, he met Jackie, and they got married. Together, they built a life full of love, raising two children and, eventually, becoming proud grandparents.

After many years of working for others, Italo decided to follow his dream. In 1973, he opened his own immigrant-owned butcher shop—Bonetti Meats, a true reflection of his dedication, skill, and pride in offering quality products to his community. His story is a testament to Italian entrepreneurship in Canada and the resilience of immigrant small business owners.

Beyond work, Italo was known for his warmth and sense of community. He and Jackie loved gathering friends around the table—sharing meals, stories, and laughter. These gatherings were rich with Italian family traditions, where food and friendship built lasting bonds. They became dear friends to many, including my own family.

Italo also loved playing bocce, a passion that connected him to his father and his roots in Italy. He often remembered playing back home and continued the tradition in Vancouver, where he spent countless afternoons on the bocce courts with the Vancouver Italian community.

Italo’s story is one of courage, hard work, and deep connection. For Italian Canadians in British Columbia, belonging was built through friendship, family, and the traditions that carried the taste and spirit of Italy across the ocean.
